Appointments are required for all services. I would be happy to schedule an appointment with you in advance. It is as easy as getting in contact with me.
Session length is typically 50 minutes. Occasionally a session can be shorter depending on the child’s needs of the day. For example, some younger children may complete their session at 40 minutes.
First Step: Parent Consultation
Prior to meeting your child, we will schedule a parent consultation meeting. Generally, this session is best completed without children present for a number of reasons. If you feel that it would be beneficial to have your child present, we can discuss this.
The purpose of this meeting is to ask you questions about your child to gain a better understanding of their needs, explain processes and policies, complete initial documentation and discuss therapeutic goals. We will also discuss ways to help you introduce play therapy to your child and prepare them for their first session. In some instances and depending on reasons for referral, we can also meet with your child to complete a separate consultation with them too.
For clients accessing insurance coverage, the Parent Consultation session can be billed as an individual session for the parent or guardian rather than under the child’s name. This way, the child can access the full amount of coverage allotted by insurance providers.
Second Step and Beyond: The Child’s Sessions
During the child’s first session, I will begin by providing an introduction and a tour of the playroom. To help establish a therapeutic relationship that is truthful and transparent, the reason for coming for counselling will be discussed with the child, limits to confidentiality will be addressed in developmentally appropriate terms and we will embark on our therapeutic journey together.
When appropriate, if requested by the child, parents are welcome to join in the first session for part of or for the entire session. During sessions, parents are asked to remain nearby in the general waiting area.
Because we all exist in relation to one another, sometimes it is appropriate to invite parents, guardians or primary caregivers into your child’s sessions to help advance therapy. We will have a conversation with you and your child beforehand to discuss this.
